A BACKGROUND ON DEIRDRE O’DONNELL

A Brief History

For over three decades, Deirdre O’Donnell has been a beacon of craftsmanship in Dublin's designer jewellery scene, passionately forging custom pieces that blend artistry with personal touch. Trained in the time-honoured tradition of goldsmiths, Deirdre honed her skills under the disciplined eye of master craftsmen.

Her educational journey in the art of jewellery making took her to The School of Jewellery in Birmingham, where her talent was twice honoured with the 'Emma Jessie Phipps Scholarship' in both 1987 and 1988. She emerged with flying colours, holding a Higher National Diploma in Design and Goldsmith Skills, distinguished by her exceptional creativity and technical prowess.

The early '90s saw Deirdre establishing her first creative workshop in the cultural melting pot of Soho, London. Surrounded by a diverse and talented community of worldwide goldsmiths, she absorbed a wealth of knowledge and experience. This period was marked by numerous successful exhibitions and a sojourn to Paris, where she was enchanted by the elegance of French-style jewellery—a muse that continues to whisper in her designs.

Her creations, ranging from bespoke jewellery admired by Dublin locals, to the intricate designs sought after by an international clientele, celebrate the beauty of 18ct gold, platinum, and silver, adorned with both precious and semi-precious gemstones.

Our Instructors

DEIRDRE O’DONNELL

Deirdre O'Donnell established The School of Jewellery Ireland (TSOJI) in November 2011 with the aim of preserving technical skills within the jewellery industry. Recognising the importance of craftsmanship, she sought to address the decline of these essential skills by providing quality education and training.

In 2015, TSOJI expanded its offerings by introducing the Full Time Certificate Course, which was further developed into 2nd and 3rd Year levels of study. This expansion provided students with a more comprehensive education in jewellery making and design.

During this period, Deirdre also launched a retail showroom and jewellery studios at 19, Anne Street South. The School then relocated to occupy the space above the showroom, fostering a synergistic environment for students and customers alike.

In September 2023, TSOJI was transitioned to the stewardship of Goldsmith and Tutor, Paul Coyne, who continues to advance the vision of the School from its established location at 19, Anne Street South, Dublin 2. Under his guidance, TSOJI's curriculum and community outreach efforts are poised for growth and evolution.

Deirdre remains committed to her mission of teaching 'lost skills' and continues to inspire students through the One Year Jewellery Skills and Design Course, also held at 19, Anne Street South, Dublin 2, ensuring that the legacy of skilled craftsmanship lives on.

CLAUDIA LENGHELL

Claudia began working with Deirdre in 2006 and has been part of Deirdre's team for over 17 years.

Initially, Claudia joined as an assistant to Deirdre on a part-time basis, however her role has grown and evolved so that she is now a senior member of the team and is now also training in the art of jewellery making under Deirdre's instruction.

Claudia has been an integral part of so much that has kept the school and the shop running smoothly over the years. In December 2022, Claudia took control of making the candles that are now sold through the shop and website. She is also the face that welcomes all customers and students to both The School of Jewellery Ireland, Deirdre O'Donnell Contemporary Jewellery and Deirdre O'Donnell - Jewellery Skills & Design Courses

In recent years she has been promoted to the role of Retail Shop Manager and is very happy to take on any challenge or task.

She is an invaluable member of the team.
